Water & Flood Resilience
Water and flood resilience projects present a complex mix of environmental risk, regulatory requirements and long‑term performance considerations. Our Geotechnical and Geospatial teams work collaboratively to provide reliable ground and site intelligence, supporting resilient design, effective flood risk management and the successful delivery of water and flood defence schemes.
Key challenges in the water & flood resilience sector:
Complex ground conditions
Steep embankments, unstable riverbanks and saturated ground create challenging working environments with constrained and often hazardous access.
Restricted plant and rig access
Limited space and difficult terrain can significantly constrain the deployment and movement of drilling rigs and specialist equipment.
Elevated health & safety risk near water
Working in and around watercourses introduces heightened health and safety considerations, including flood risk, instability and restricted escape routes.
Remote and logistically challenging locations
Flood defence and water infrastructure assets are often located in remote or isolated areas, increasing logistical complexity and mobilisation requirements.
Uncertain subsurface conditions
Historic man-made structures, buried obstructions and undocumented works can lead to highly variable and unpredictable ground conditions.
Environmental and ecological sensitivity
Works frequently take place in environmentally sensitive settings, requiring careful management to minimise ecological impact and ensure regulatory compliance.
Supporting water & flood resilience projects
Water and flood resilience infrastructure operates within some of the most demanding and environmentally sensitive environments encountered in ground investigation. From flood defence embankments and reservoir structures to river management schemes and drainage infrastructure, a thorough understanding of subsurface conditions, asset geometry and site constraints is essential to safe and effective delivery.
Our geotechnical and geospatial teams work collaboratively to provide the reliable site intelligence needed across the full project lifecycle. By integrating specialist drilling, ground investigation, laboratory testing and advanced survey services, we support clients, engineers and asset owners in making informed decisions from early feasibility and condition assessment through to detailed design and construction.
Expertise for Water and Flood Infrastructure
Our experience means we know what to expect. Steep embankments, saturated soils, watercourse proximity, buried obstructions and undocumented historic works are all familiar territory. So too are the environmental and ecological sensitivities that come with most flood and water infrastructure sites. We have worked in these conditions many times before, and that experience shapes how we plan and deliver every project.
Our ground investigation programmes are built around those realities. We characterise embankment condition, foundation soils, groundwater and geohazards, and our specialist drilling techniques get us into constrained, remote and otherwise difficult locations. Our UKAS-accredited laboratory provides the high-quality test data that engineers need to design with confidence.
Geospatial surveys complete the picture. Accurate topographical data on ground levels, embankment profiles, drainage features and the surrounding environment gives designers and contractors something reliable to work from. Combine that with solid ground data, and clients can understand what they’re dealing with early, coordinate their design effectively, and get on with delivering infrastructure that does its job.
