Energy & Carbon Capture
Energy and renewable projects operate in technically challenging environments where ground conditions, asset stability and long‑term reliability are critical. Our geotechnical and geospatial expertise supports informed design, safe construction and the sustainable delivery of energy infrastructure across onshore and offshore environments.
Key challenges the Energy & Carbon Capture Sector:
Challenging terrain and sensitive landscapes
Projects are frequently located in peatland, highland and coastal environments where difficult ground conditions and sensitive landscapes constrain access and working methods.
Complex land access and stakeholder management
Securing access across large land holdings often involves multiple landowners, tenants and interest groups, requiring careful stakeholder engagement and coordination.
Remote locations and harsh environmental conditions
Energy and carbon capture assets are commonly situated in remote areas exposed to severe weather, increasing logistical complexity and placing greater demands on workforce safety and welfare.
Ecological and environmental sensitivity
Works often take place in areas of high ecological value, including peatlands and protected habitats, requiring stringent controls to minimise environmental impact and ensure compliance.
Ground conditions affecting carbon storage and infrastructure integrity
Variable geology, deep stratigraphy and complex hydrogeological conditions can present significant challenges to foundation design, pipeline routing and long‑term carbon storage performance.
Regulatory, permitting and decarbonisation pressures
Energy and carbon capture projects are subject to evolving regulatory frameworks, permitting requirements and sustainability expectations, demanding robust data and careful programme management.
Supporting Energy & Carbon Capture Projects
The shift towards cleaner energy is one of the most significant challenges of our time, and the ground beneath our feet plays a bigger role in that than most people realise. Wind farms, solar installations, battery storage facilities, substations, carbon capture and storage projects, and the infrastructure that connects them all depend on a thorough understanding of ground conditions before anything gets built. Get that wrong, and the consequences are costly. Get it right, and projects move forward with confidence.
Our geotechnical and geospatial teams have been working across the energy sector for many years. From onshore wind and solar to large scale transmission infrastructure and emerging carbon capture schemes, we provide the ground data that engineers, developers and asset owners need to make good decisions, at every stage of a project.
Geotechnical and Geospatial services for energy & carbon capture
Every energy project, regardless of scale or technology, has the same fundamental need: reliable data about what the ground is going to do. Turbine foundations, cable routes, substation structures and carbon storage geology all make specific demands on ground investigation, and variable conditions, remote locations and tight programmes are rarely far away.
Our ground investigation programmes address all of it. We characterise soils and rock, assess bearing capacity, identify geohazards and investigate groundwater, giving design teams what they need to move forward with confidence. Specialist drilling rigs enable us to access difficult and remote locations, and our UKAS accredited laboratory provides the test data that underpins every assessment. Geospatial surveys complete the picture, giving project teams an accurate, design ready understanding of the surface environment from the outset.
