GEL at the University of Exeter

Geotechnical Engineering Limited recently had the pleasure of visiting the University of Exeter to speak with second‑year Civil Engineering students, as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting education and engaging with the next generation of engineers.

The session provided an opportunity to introduce students to Geotechnical Engineering Ltd, share insight into who we are as a business, and explain how we operate within the ground investigation industry. We would like to extend our thanks to the University of Exeter, and in particular Raffaele Vinai, for the warm welcome and for facilitating a valuable and engaging discussion.
Our Operations Support Manager, Rachael Parry, delivered an overview of the Engineering Geologist role, outlining the varied and hands‑on experience that comes with a career in ground investigation. She highlighted how site‑based work, technical analysis and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams combine to make the role both challenging and rewarding.

Principal Engineering Geologist, Ed Crimp, then guided students through the fundamentals of British Standard BS 5930, explaining how it underpins our day‑to‑day work and informs best practice across ground investigation projects. To bring the subject to life, Ed shared soil samples and drilling equipment, helping students link theory with practical application and gain a clearer understanding of how investigations are carried out on site.

At Geotechnical Engineering Limited, we place great value on opportunities to connect with students and early‑career professionals. Sharing industry knowledge, practical insight and real‑world experience is an important part of supporting the future of geotechnical engineering.
We hope the session provided useful insight into the profession and offered students a clearer picture of what a career in geotechnical investigation can involve. We look forward to continuing our engagement with universities and supporting the development of future engineers across the industry.
